5 Tips For Better Back Health | Spine Institute of Marc A. Cohen, M.D. -

    Last updated 1 year ago

It is true that as we continue to age, the occurrence of back pain becomes more and more likely. Unfortunately, many of us accept this as inevitable, and do nothing to prevent it from happening.  There are, however, several things you can do to maintain proper back health well into the later stages of life. Read through the below tips for more details and get started on the path to good back health today!

Exercise Properly. One of the most effective ways to improve the health of your back and spine is to exercise properly.  Do not put too much strain on your body and be sure to lift from the knees rather than the shoulders when using weights. Also think about prioritizing core-strengthening (Pilates) and low-impact (swimming, walking) exercises.  The former type improves the body’s strength and stability and the latter emphasizes aerobic activity and prevents harmful weight gain.

Stretch Often. Before and after exercise, and periodically throughout the day, stretch your arms, neck, back and legs. This prevents the tightening of muscles and tendons that occurs over long periods of stasis or after strenuous activity.  Stretching will also flush your body of toxins that collect in muscle tissue.

Practice Good Posture. When sitting or standing, keep your spine as straight as possible, with your shoulders back and your head and neck in line with your spine. By not hunching, you are keeping the discs and bones of your spine in alignment and inhibiting harmful wear and tear. For those who find themselves sitting for hours on end at home or work, consider buying an ergonomic chair—these facilitate good posture by providing consistent support for the back and neck and will minimize discomfort for those already suffering from back pain.

Wear Appropriate Shoes. Excessively high heels and shoes with little to no support can cause back misalignment and spinal problems over a long period of time. While wearing fashionable shoes for the occasional event will do no harm, during exercise and typical daily activities, be sure to wear shoes that are comfortable and provide plenty of support for both your arch and your ankle.

Sleep Comfortably. Try to lie in back-friendly positions while sleeping; avoid resting with your head, shoulders and neck elevated above your spine.  Also, try placing a pillow between your knees to facilitate proper alignment. It’s a good idea to invest in a back-friendly mattress.  Keep in mind that a medium to medium-firm mattress will do more good for your spine than a soft-cushioned pillow top.
